Although Mephisto was finally name-dropped in the MCU, there hasn't been any official confirmation as to where and when he might appear next. Having been referenced in Agatha All Along, it was confirmed that the classic Marvel Comics villain does indeed exist in the MCU. That being said, nothing else about the demon lord was revealed in the MCU show, leaving behind major questions about Mephisto's whereabouts and status.
In Marvel Comics, Mephisto is a supernatural dark lord of evil who thrives on making Faustian deals with mortals and claiming their souls, relishing in his existence as he plays on human fears that he's the Devil. An incredibly powerful force to be reckoned with, Agatha All Along confirming that he does indeed exist in the MCU was very exciting, while also being a bit of a letdown when nothing else about the villain was revealed. However, Mephisto may end up making a full debut in the MCU sooner than some might think.
Agatha All Along Finally Name-Dropped Mephisto
Following Years of Fan Speculation and Theories
Speculation about Mephisto's existence in the MCU truly began with 2021's WandaVision, the first MCU series to stream on Disney+. While the demon lord never appeared nor even referenced, an explosion of theories pointing to potential evidence and clues plagued the internet during the show's release and years afterward. Eventually, "Mephisto Confirmed" became a widespread joke whenever new MCU trailers dropped, often pointing to truly innocuous pieces of evidence for the sake of the running gag.
12 Biggest Unanswered Questions After Agatha All Along
Agatha All Along has recently concluded, providing a satisfying ending that still leaves audiences with some very exciting MCU questions.
That said, there were some more legitimate theories that Mephisto was going to appear either in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home due to his dark comics history with Peter Parker, or in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a major supernatural foe. However, 2024's Agatha All Along episode 3 finally name-dropped Mephisto three years later. During the coven's first trial on the Witches' Road, potions witch Jennifer Kale shared some insights with Billy Maximoff about Agatha and the rumors that her son Nicholas Scratch became an "agent of Mephisto" after she allegedly traded him for a copy of the Darkhold.
An "Agent of Mephisto" Was Never Revealed In Agatha All Along
It Wasn't Billy Maximoff or Nicholas Scratch
During the release of Agatha All Along and following this Mephisto reveal from Jennifer Kale, it was theorized that Joe Locke's "Teen" might be an agent of Mephisto in connection with his real identity as a reincarnated Billy Maximoff aka Wiccan. This would have tied to the character's comics history, as Billy and Tommy's souls were originally part of Mephisto himself before Wanda unknowingly used them to create her sons with her powers. Perhaps in the MCU, Mephisto would have had some level of influence over Billy.
Although "Teen" was indeed revealed to be Billy Maximoff in Agatha All Along, his reincarnation had nothing to do with Mephisto. Likewise, it was also confirmed that Agatha's own son, Nicholas Scratch, was not an agent of Mephisto as was rumored. By Agatha All Along's ending, there were no further reveals about who might have been an agent of Mephisto, beyond the single reference in the third episode that he does have people who serve and do his bidding.
Marvel Needs To Do Something With Mephisto Now
He Needs To Be More Than A Reference
Although this Agatha All Along mention finally confirmed Mephisto, it was admittedly a bit of a letdown. After all, it was essentially a throwaway line that didn't do or reveal anything beyond the confirmation that Mephisto exists. While that's certainly exciting enough in its own way, one would have hoped that there would have been a little meat to the reveal after years of theories and speculation.
"Mephisto has the capability of becoming a key overarching villain, just like Thanos the Mad Titan or presumably, Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom..."
Despite the single reference to Marvel's predominant Lord of Evil, Mephisto certainly deserves more in the MCU going forward. After all, he has the potential to become a major villain sourced in the MCU's more supernatural stories. Likewise, Mephisto ranks high of the list of Marvel's most powerful villains. Mephisto has the capability of becoming a key overarching villain, just like Thanos the Mad Titan or presumably Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom.
In that same vein, it's possible Mephisto could be involved in the origins of Doctor Doom considering their extremely dark history in the comics. When Victor von Doom was a child, his mother Cynthia lost her life at the hands of Mephisto who had promised her power in exchange for her soul. Seeing as how this motivated Doom's desire to learn sorcery just as much as science to free his mother's soul, it wouldn't be surprising if Mephisto's full debut becomes tied with Doom's in the MCU. That said, it's also possible that Mephisto's debut could be happening even sooner.
Mephisto Is Reported To Be Making His MCU Debut Next Year
He Could Debut In Ironheart
According to reports and rumors, Mephisto may very well debut in 2025's Ironheart. Having first appeared in 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ,the story of Riri Williams' Ironheart is continuing in her own series coming to Disney+. Likewise, the show is also set to debut The Hood in the MCU played by Anthony Ramos, who could be a prime Marvel villain to help debut the MCU's Mephisto in full.
In the comics, Parker Robbins comes into possession of a demon-possessed hood and boots with powers that help him leverage his career as a small-time criminal into the head of his own criminal empire. To that end, it's been reported that Sacha Baron Cohen has a secret role in Ironheart, one that many believe is Mephisto himself. After all, Cohen would be a good fit to play the demon lord, and could easily portray Mephisto's dark charisma. Likewise, it's not hard to imagine the MCU's Robbins selling his soul to Mephisto in exchange for the hood and boots.
Having faced numerous delays due to the pandemic and the recent writers' strike, it's possible that Ironheart might finally become the project that debuts Mephisto in full. That said, Mephisto will likely make an appearance sooner rather than later, even if he doesn't end up appearing in the upcoming series. Naturally, the years of fan engagement with a villain who was only officially confirmed in 2024 is quite remarkable, and is more than likely something Marvel Studios intends to take advantage of.
All episodes of Agatha All Along are now streaming on Disney+. Ironheart is set to premiere on June 24th, 2025.
