The colorful scene at the Santa Monica Pier will no longer include exotic animals, following a vote of the Santa Monica City Council to ban the creatures from Palisades Park. Following several complaints from citizens, the council voted 6-0 to forbid exotic animal handlers from city parks, sidewalks adjacent to parks, beaches, and Oceanfront Walk. Speakers at the council hearing expressed concerns about public safety, crowding, and the treatment of the animals. Dr. Heather Rally, a licensed veterinarian, spoke in favor of the ban, expressing concern that the animals were being exploited for financial gain. The Recreation and Parks Commission also submitted letters in support of the new ordinance.
